Bookmarks can be as simple or elaborate as you wish, according to the age and skill of the maker. They are useful as bazaar items, especially if they have not cost much to make and can therefore be sold cheaply.
To be useful as well as decorative, they need to be in the approximate proportions of 1 to 5 or 6 (e.g. 1 inch wide by 5 or 6 inches long or 3 cms. wide by 15 or 18 cms long etc.) Cut - out shapes may need to be proportionately narrower or wider according to the design.
Cut-out shapes for bookmarks : animals and birds can "sit" or "perch" on the top of the page, with their tail hanging down to mark the page :

Try using plaited wool or embroidery threads, or ribbon, as the "tail" to mark the page. Birds could have single feathers as tails.
Plastic "canvas" makes very nice bookmarks : the girls can make up their own designs on squared paper first then stitch them in wools or embroidery silks according to the size of the canvas grid.
